During Orient Retreat, we are organizing a live music show open to everyone to join — whether you are part of the full retreat or traveling to Tunisia specifically for this performance experience to live music Saturday 3. OCT 2026.
We are creating a rare opportunity for dancers locally and worldwide of all levels to take part in this special event and perform with Tunisian live musicians in a reel castle once owned by kings. Here, you can feel the energy and magic of history in this remarkable place in the old Medina of Tunis.
Perform to one of your favorite songs, and explore the feeling of improvising to the sounds and emotions of the beautiful Oriental music, played by professional Tunisian musicians.
Any style is welcome as long as the orchestra can play your song. You may choose to perform once or twice during the evening.
Want a taqasim within your performance too? The musicians will follow your lead. Experience a true Tarab setting – a must for every oriental dancer!
Dance Categories: Oriental dance (classical/modern style), Tabla solo, Egyptian baladi, folkloric dances (Saidi, fellahi etc), fusion styles, veil dance, Andalusian dance (muwashahat), Tunisian dance and more.
Its all about the connection
This experience is about connecting with the music in the moment. Feel the instruments, respond to the rhythm, and share the energy with the ladies in the audience.
No choreography, just pure improvisation.
Dancing with live musicians is a unique experience and a true highlight for many oriental dancers for any levels. It deepens your musicality, presence, and artistic expression.
This opportunity is open to both professional dancers and students, where the goal is not perfection, but connection — with the music, the musicians & the people in the room.
Professional photoshoots before and during the performance can be booked separately in advance.
Your Questions Answered
Can I join the show if I have never performed to live music before?
Yes. This is the perfect moment to discover what it feels like to dance in an authentic live music setting.
Whatever techniques you have, what you know becomes your tools for translating what you hear into movement and expression. The audience will experience the music through your body. The audience is mainly women who understand that dancers come from different levels and backgrounds. They are supportive, warm, and brings wonderful energy to the performances.
I already have a lot of experience performing to live music as a professional. Is this still for me?
Absolutely. Dancing with a live orchestra is an art that can never be fully mastered, because every performance is unique.
This is an opportunity to deepen your connection to the music, enjoy your presence on stage, and get the experience of dancing with live musicians in a beautiful Tunisian castle. A perfect energy boost for any teacher/professional dancer in the field.
What should I prepare in advance?
The most important thing is to come with an open mind. Your trained skills are already within your body — and now its the time to relax! It’s about being emotionally ready to let go, feel the music, and be fully present. Focusing on expressing rather than impressing.
You can refine your technique beforehand by taking classes with teachers in your community, but ultimately, preparing yourself means preparing to be in the moment— to be able to connect with the music, the musicians, and the audience. Studying rhythms and listening carefully to your chosen song in all its versions, including the originals, can help you much while you're on the stage.
By joining the full Orient Retreat program, we offer live music classes leaded by experienced dancers to practice improvisation to live Taqasims, giving you even more preparation and tips for your performance.
Do I need to dance in a professional costume?
No, it is not necessary. The choice of outfit is up to you. However, if you choose a costume, we recommend wearing a dance outfit suited to the style you have chosen. If in doubt, ask your teacher in your dance community that can provide guidance if needed.
Will there be a rehearsal?
No formal rehearsal will take place. The purpose is to experience live music in the moment, rather than relying on memorized notes and movements. You should know all versions of your chosen song in advance, and be prepared for any changes.
This approach is recommended by experienced dancers, and will help you stay fully present, improvise naturally, and connect deeply with the music and audience by being open to whatever the musicians will play.

never the same.”
